The Latest research studies made by several scientists have found out that there are new ways which can be followed in making Solar cells less expensive and more efficient. In the research project researchers from the University of Toronto explained about how the nickel can work the same as gold for electrical contacts in colloidal quantum dot solar cells. However another team of researchers from California’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have also came up with the demonstration that added selenium to zinc oxide, dramatically increasing the oxide’s efficiency in absorbing solar light. Both these methodology is easier to incorporate in practical in making solar cells as this would be much cheaper.
However quantum solar cells are less expensive material as the dots themselves are nanoscale bits of a semiconductor material, created using low-cost chemical reactions. However the traditional method incorporates use of gold electrical contacts in order to get the dots whereas researcher have found out that the it is quite possible to do the same process by making use of nickel instead of gold which would cost much cheaper. When the first team of researchers made their experiment with the nickel it first mingled with the quantum dots, forming a compound that blocked the flow of the electrical current. Later they came up by adding one nanometer of lithium fluoride between the nickel and the dots which allowed the current to pass through from dots to the nickel.
The scientists said that the use of nickel the material cost of dots in making solar cells will be minimized a lot which will be nearly 30 to 80%. They plan to commercialize the technology once they can boost the cells’ overall efficiency.
