Lenovo IdeaCentre A600

Until recently, Lenovo hasn’t been known for being a forward thinking company in terms of design. They have some nice things and that is good enough but their designs are not so spectacular.

Every aspect of the computer is well designed with lots of touches that add a polished and finished feel to the overall look.
The screen is protected by a sheet of glass and because of it’s form – the base is flaring down and behind – it can be very easily mounted to the wall.

This machine is the world’s thinnest desktop having the thinnest point only 1 inch thick. As a result of this unique design, with a thin, flat screen on top of a thicker, curved bottom, the A600 needs a stand on the bottom that juts forward in order to maintain its balance.

Unfortunately, also because it’s design, it is hard to move it around. So it will be best if you chose a place for it before you arrange it.
Lenovo added a webcam to the top middle of the display, a device that’s increasingly being added to notebooks, desktops and even monitors. Stereo microphones sit next to it on either side and stereo speakers sit at the bottom. What’s interesting, however, is the way in which Lenovo takes advantage of the webcam’s capabilities.

What comes along with the webcam drivers is a VeriFace  facial recognition utility that lets users log in just by sitting in front of their computer.
Additionally the A600 monitors the webcam for room brightness and automatically adjusts the back lighting of the display. Also the desktop monitors, through its webcam, how close or how far you sit from the display, and if you sit to close or to far a message pops out and tells you to adjust your posture.

Looking at the A600 head on, no buttons are visible. This is because there’s only one physical button on the entire computer — a power button, on the left hand side.

Viewing angles are pretty good. The display is covered with a sheet of glass that runs edge to edge and that adds a feeling of luxury but also adds some reflection to the screen as well as some slight optical distortion.

The machine uses lower-power components which are rarely the equal of similar components used in most desktops.
System performance with the Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 processor and ATI Mobility Radeon HD3650 is very good for both regular users and power-users that might enjoy using the computer for typing documents in the early evening, and switching to some light gaming or HD movie watching late at night.

It comes with a wireless keyboard with touchpad, wireless lase mouse and a 3D motion controller. Those components are great compared with some of the “free” components included with some computers.
The coolest feature of the A600 is the media remote.gyroscopic mouse/VOIP handset/game controller.
It can work as a presentation controller, moving the pointer around the screen with basic gyroscopic control, with left and right mouse buttons located near the center of the remote. It also has full controls for Windows Media Center and can function as a wireless handset to make calls through VOIP software, with a microphone and speaker built into it.
